Lower Jaw & Chin Deficiencies
People often have underdeveloped lower jaws, or weak chins, This often has negative effects on
the posture of the lower lip. There are several options available to correct this problem. The
most effective aesthetic results are seen when we take the lower border of the lower jaw and slide
it forward, After it heals in a few weeks the result is more natural looking and more stable than
implants or other surgical techniques.
The animation below shows the movement of the jaws before and after surgery:
Procedure descriptions:
Mandibular Sagittal Ramus Ostoetomy - This procedure is also performed through small
incisions behind the lower third molars and consists of a sagittal cut being made on each side
of the mandible allowing us to slide the jaw forward and elongate the jaw without the need for
a bone graft. Bone contact is maintained and this procedure can be plated or screwed together
in a new position allowing early function of the lower jaw during healing. It requires more
accuracy in positioning the jaw and does not allow for significant bite adjustments during the
healing period.
