Chin Procedures

Many patients seek chin procedures, or genioplasty, to correct the position or size of their chins and restore facial harmony and balance.  Altering the appearance of the chin can have a great impact on a person’s overall appearance.

Some patients seek chin augmentation for weak or small chins, whereas, others look for chin reduction or recontouring.  We use an intraoral approach to recontour the patient’s own chin bone and secure it in a more natural appearing position.

Chin procedures can often be performed as outpatient procedures in an ambulatory surgery setting.  Patients often go home the same day.  A chin dressing is placed around the chin and jaw to control postoperative swelling.

Most patients return to work within a few days after surgery.

This gentleman was unhappy with his weak chin.  He wanted a genioplasty procedure.

This photo was taken 3 weeks after surgery.  He is much happier with the appearance of his chin.

This patient presented to our office unhappy with the appearance of his small chin.

He underwent genioplasty in the operating room.  This is his photo 2 weeks after surgery.

Chin procedures for failed chin implants

Our experience has shown us that many patients with chin implants seek alternative methods of chin augmentation for the following reasons:

  1. Chin implants can become displaced, look crooked and sag, making their appearance noticeable over time.
  2. Pressure from the implant on the surrounding bone can cause the implant to bury itself into the patient’s chin bone causing recession of the chin itself.
  3. Aging skin and wrinkles on the outside of the face can also draw attention to the implant and make the outline of the implant more obvious.

After removing the chin implant, we are able to enhance the chin by advancing a patient’s own bone.  This creates a more natural and stable result.  In our office, we can simulate the surgery ahead of time and show the patient computer morphs to ensure that their cosmetic goals are met.

Advancing a patient’s own chin bone can create a more natural and esthetic appearance.  The operation involves removing the preexisting chin implant, after which the chin bone is sectioned and slid on itself creating a broad, balanced look.

The new position of the chin is held in place with flat profile screws and the look lasts a lifetime.  Once the new bony position has healed, this chin procedure can become a more permanent solution for people with chin deformities (chins that are prominent, deficient or asymmetrical).

This patient had a chin implant.  The bone behind the chin implant is thinned because of pressure from the implant itself.

This patient had a chin implant that moved.  He wanted replacement genioplasty.

This is a picture of the same patient (as above) 2 days after surgery.

This is a picture of a patient who had a chin implant that was very noticeable.  The skin sagged around the margins of the implant.

This is the same patient 2 weeks after removable of her chin implant and genioplasty.

This patient had a chin implant that she was not happy with.  She thought he chin looked too small and too far back.

This is a picture of the same patient after her chin implant was removed and she had a replacement genioplasty.  This picture was taken 4 days after surgery.
